Inducted February 21, 1991
It is particularly gratifying to Bob Karpe that Frank Gifford was here on the occasion Karpe's induction into Bob Elias Hall of Fame. The two were high school football teammates and close friends off the field, as well. Although Karpe had signed to attend Stanford, famed coach Lynn "Pappy" Waldorf came to Bakersfield and talked him into switching to California. There, despite knee injuries which shortened his career, he established himself as one of the West Coast's outstanding one-on-one blockers, using a technique he credits to Homer Beatty at Bakersfield High. Before Karpe captained the Golden Bears in the 1950 Rose Bowl, he worked with Bob Elias for several years as a football color man and expert commentator. A well-known real estate figure here, he has served both California and the federal government in high appointive positions.
