Outstanding football player at Arvin High SChool, Bakersfield College and UCLA before embarking on a brilliant coaching career. At UCLA he was an outstanding linebacker who remains in UCLA folklore for recovering two onside kicks that helped the Bruins to notable wins: a comeback 20-16 win over USC in 1965 and a 14-12 win over then undefeated Michigan State in the 1966 Rose Bowl. As a coach, his West High teams went 77-7-2 from 1977 to 1983, never losing more than two games in any season and winning valley championships in 1977, 1980 and 1981. Grider then joined the football coaching staff at Bakersfield College, where he served as linebackers coach and defensive coordinator before replacing Carl Bowser as the Renegades head coach in 1995. The ‘Gades went 75-22 in his nine seasons before retirement after the 2003 seasons.
