When one puts together a list of the best pole vaulters from Kern County, Wicks is at the top. Took up the event as a freshman at South High. Was a state meet participant by his junior year and the state champion his senior year. At Bakersfield College he set the national JC record with at 17’ 7” vault; a record that stood for 13 years and was a two-time state JC champion. Injuries marred his USC career, but he still placed second at the NCAA National Indoor Championships his junior year. Following college he competed nationally and internationally and was an Olympic Trials participant in 1988 and 1992. His lifetime best in the event was 18’5 ½.
