Inducted February 1981
At the age 30, two years after retiring from professional basketball because of injuries, Freddie Boyd became the first representative of his sports to be inducted into the Bob Elias Hall of Fame. Fast and graceful, he started every basketball game he ever played in during his high school career, at East Bakersfield, and at Oregon State University, where he was one of the nation’s outstanding guards. Boyd was versatile athlete starring in foot-ball and track well, in high school, before concentrating on basketball to further his development in that sport. He played for Philadelphia and New Orleans in the NBA.
