At Bakersfield High School, Jake recorded 159 victories with 132 wins by pin. He was a 4 time medalist, and was undefeated his junior and senior year with an 81-0 record. His senior year, Jake became the first wrestler in California State History to pin all his opponents in League, Yosemite Valley, Masters, and all 6 opponents at the California State Championships. Jake received the "Wade Schalles National High School Pinner" Award. As a junior, Jake won the Junior National Championship in Nebraska. As a senior, he made the Junior World team, by defeating the NCAA 3rd place medalist.
At Iowa State University. Jake was a 4 time NCAA finalist winning the 197 lb NCAA Championship his junior and senior years. His senior year, Jake was undefeated (31-0) and was the only collegian to make the USA's Men's World Freestyle team. At ISU, Jake was a 3 time All Star champion and was awarded the prestigious ISU Male Athlete of the Year 2 times.
The 2005 Bakersfield High graduate and 2010 Iowa State graduate continued his wrestling success by winning the 2011 Bronze medal at the World Championships in Istanbul,Turkey, and the Gold Medal at the 2011 Pan-American Games In Guatemala, Mexico. The following year, Jake reached the ultimate pinnacle of World Freestyle wrestling where he won the 2012 Olympic Games Gold Medal at 96 kg (211 lbs.) in London. Jake also won 3 USA Opens and 4 World Team Trials. He is currently coaching at PennState University.
