Graduate of Bakersfield High School, where he lettered in track and football. Returned from Air Force to compete in track at Bakersfield Junior College. Entered University of California where hamstring injury forced conversion from hurdler to quarter miler. After assisting in football at California and track at Berkeley High School, became track coach at Fullterton High School, then to Fullerton Junior College, where he developed a state junior college championship track team. Went to Occidental in 1962, turning out three conference champions. To UCLA where his team won four NCAA championships in 1966-72-73. First coach to be voted “Coach of the Year” twice by the U.S. Track Coaches Association. Head Coach USA National Track Team in 1973. Past president of the United States Track Coaches Association.
