Inducted February 21, 1991
With the induction of Larry Press, longtime sports columnist for the Bakersfield Californian, the Bob Elias Hall of Fame rook in its first sports journalist. Press came to Bakersfield in 1953 for what he though was a short-term job and now, he is closing on four full decades of chronicling the feats of this area's outstanding athletes and teams. Press was named sports editor of the Californian in 1955 and held that post until becoming full-time columnist. His "In the Press Box" became a familiar daily personal view of the outstanding events and athletes of the times. Covering the World Series in 1989, his earthquake reports from the Bay Area earned him the Californian's annual Golden Quill Award for outstanding reporting-- even though the sports aspect was quickly forgotten.
