For many years, Les Carpenter was a fixture on the local high school sports scene, as a football and baseball coach at East Bakersfield High School, and later as athletic director at that school for 11 years. Carpenter, a Utah native, was raised in Paso Robles and attended San Jose State, where he captained both the baseball and football teams his senior year. He started his coaching career at Avenal in 1942, and then came to East High in 1947 and started a 17-year tenure as baseball coach. His players included major leaguers-to-be Johnny Callison and Billy Cowan, who both have preceded his into to Bob Elias Hall of Fame. Carpenter was also a long-time AAU track and field official and served in that capacity at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.
