Mike McCaffrey once scored 46 points in a basketball game for Garces High, but it was in football that he made his mark at the University of California. His career at Berkeley was so outstanding that in 1982 he was named first team defensive end on Cal's all-time team. McCaffrey never weighed more than 225 pounds while playing in college but earned All-Pac 8 and All-Coast honors and All-American honorable mention. He was a co-captain his senior season, 1968. In addition he played for the College All-Stars against the New York Jets in 1969, in the East-West Shrine game and the Coaches All-American game. McCaffrey was the second pick of the Minnesota Vikings in the 1960 draft, spent one season with them and two more with the Buffalo Bills in an injury-shortened professional career. He is an agri-businessman and currently president of Bakersfield High Booster Club.
