Despite being on 5-foot-9, Phillips has wowed basketball fans around the world by using his 48-inch vertical leaping ability to dunk over players sometimes a foot taller. As a junior at Foothill High, he helped the Trojans win the 1988 State Division II Championship, the first boys state basketball title by a Kern County school. He was a catalyst on Cal State Bakersfield’s 33-0 Division II national championship team in 1993. After CSUB, Phillips went on to play eight seasons with the Harlem Globetrotters where he was nicknamed “The Regulator” while playing in more than 60 countries. He now spends his time working with at-risk youngsters in Bakersfield.
