Born in Los Angeles. Moved to Bakersfield at early age. Attended Bakersfield High School. Competed in football, basketball, swimming. Set several prep records. Went to North Central College, Illinois. Selected to USA Pan American Team. Selected to USA Olympic team in 1960. Member of 800 meter freestyle relay team which set Olympic and World record. Individually, set American record in 200 meter freestyle in 1959, re-set mark in 1961. First coached at Foothill High School, Bakersfield. Moved to Lynbrook High School, San Jose. 1976 team undefeated. Helms Hall of Fame 1971. Selected California high school swimming coach of the year 1976 by Coaches Association. Wife Shirley, children Karen and Eric. Burr Baldwin Graduate of Bakersfield High School, class of 1940. Was an outstanding high school football star. At UCLA, played football in 1940-41-42 and competed in the January 1, 1943 Rose Bowl Game. Entered U.S. Army in 1943. Returned to UCLA after World War II and became an All-American selection at end in 1946. Played in the January 1, 1947, Rose Ball game. Played professional foot-ball for Los Angeles Dons 1947-48-49. In Korean conflict 1951-53. Member of Chamber of Commerce Sports committee and instrumental in staging 1956-58-60 National AAU track meets.
