Born in Oakland, grew up in Los Angeles. Played football at Cal-Berkely before going into athletic administration. Since becoming athletic director at Cal State Bakersfield in 1972, the school has built a dominant Division II program under his guidance, leadership and direction. He earned the National Association of Collegiate Athletic Directors' first-ever Athletic Director of the Year award in 1999. During his tenure, CSUB has produced 26 NCAA national championship teams and countless individual national championships, and All-Americans. Carvajal helped develop the CSUB Foundation, a non-profit group that annually provides a majority of the school's working budget, including scholarship monies. He was also influential in the construction of the on-campus Icardo Center that opened in 1989.
