William (Buckshot) Mayathlete
Inducted February 9, 1984
When this gangling right-handed pitcher signed with Seattle of the Pacific Coast League in 1922, it marked the start of a 14-year career in which he compiled a 146-110 record and four times won over 20 games, with most of his achievements coming in triple-A, next highest classification to the major leagues. He also had a brief taste of life at the top, spending several months with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1924. Perhaps the most notable achievement in May's dossier is that he was the first Kern athlete to become a professional in a abeam sport and thus was a trailblazer for so many stars who have followed that route, from this county to stardom.
