Art Dalzell

We the head track coach at Bakersfield High School from 1968-91, where he led the Drillers to 15 South Yosemite League titles, eight CIF Central Section team Championships and a dual meet record of 119-6. Dalzell also helped organize Central Section and Southern California regional meets and was the meet director of the annual Kern Relays for several years. He also coached BHS to four SYL Cross Country Championships. A native of Kansas, Dalzell was an outstanding track athlete at Powerhouse University of Kansas, which was undefeated in dual meet competition in the mid 1950’s during his three years of competition. He was an All-American in Country in 1955 when he helped Kansas win the national championship. He also competed in the U.S. Olympic Trials in 1956, where he reached the 1500-meter finals. Dalzell was in the Army for two years, began his coaching career in Kansas City and arrived in Bakersfield in 1959.
