Since 1964, the Jockey Club has been a staple for local student-athletes from high school, junior college and Cal State Bakersfield.
In its inception, the Jockey Club was more of an informal press conference for local sports journalists and sports anchors to celebrate local athletes.
Now, it’s one of the top honors a student-athlete can receive at the weekly breakfast ceremonies held at Hodel’s on Tuesdays.
As the organization’s motto states, the Jockey Club has been “empowering local scholar-athletes since 1964.” The recipients aren’t just chosen for their abilities in their respective sports, but for their overall character and hard work in the classroom by their coaches, athletic directors and administrators.
One of the greatest and longest running traditions in Kern County sports, the Jockey Club has set itself as one of the premier organizations in the United States for recognizing local athletes in a fashion that is second to none.
