Bernard (Frenchy) Uhalt

Native Bakersfieldian, known since early days as “Frenchy,” he was named by his immortal Driller coach Goldie Griffith as the best back he had ever coached at BHS. Rated as a great running and passing quarterback, he was captain and teammate of Tyack on 1928 BHS team which won last state championship before playoffs were eliminated. Uhalt, a Four-sport man also lettered in baseball, track and basketball. An outstanding shortstop with speed, a strong arm and potent at the place, he started his pro career in 1929 with the Bakersfield Bees and moved to Oakland of the PCL the next year. Highlight of his 19-year pro career was playing with the Chicago White Sox.
