Graduate of Bakersfield High School, where he lettered in baseball. Also participated in the sport at Bakersfield College and spent three years in the U.S. Army. Attended George Barr Umpire School in 1956 and started umpiring in the Sooner State Class D League. Progressed to the California League and after five years went to the Pacific Coast League in 1962. Called up the National League in August 1965. Umpired the All-Star games of 1966 and 1973. Umpired championship play-off games of 1970 and 1973. Was on the 1972 World Series umpire crew. Elected President of Major League Umpires association in 1974 and then became a member of the Board of directors. Has been selected by the Air Force to hold umpiring clinics in Europe in off-season. Wife Pat, son Lance and daughter Lisa reside in Bakersfield.
