Carl Berra came to Bakersfield after World War II service, having been a three sport athlete at the University of Arizona. Starting as a coach at BHS, he then became athletic director at that school, then sports commissioner for the Kern High School District and then DIG Sectional Commissioner. He was active in implementing girls' sports programs. Berra, a long-time sports official, is a member of the Kern County officials association Hall of Fame. He served for 10 years as president of the Junior Baseball Association.
