An all-around athlete at Wasco High School who played football at Bakersfield College and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo before beginning his coaching career in 1971. Worked as an assistant coach with five college programs before switching to pro football in 1983 with the Philadelphia Stars of the USFL. Currently the quarterbacks coach fro the Cleveland Browns. Prior to Cleveland, Smith was an assistant with the New England Patriots, and was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for 11 years with the New Orleans Saints, who annually ranked among the NFL leaders in passing offense.
