Charlie Craig
coachInducted February 21, 1991
Charlie Craig is synonymous with track and field at Cal State University Bakersfield. He started that sport's program in the-then new school and has been its only coach. A Fresno native, Craig left Cal-Berkeley, where he was an assistant to Sam Bell, for the chance to build a program according to his own concept. When Craig came to CSUB (then CSB), there was no track, no equipment-- and no athletes. But he improvised equipment, somehow suited up a squad of a dozen athletes-- and then had to plunge directly into the daunting CCAA league competition. Craig, who was a world class triple jumper at Fresno State, built the Roadrunner program gradually into a solid and representative one. He has given back to his sport generously, serving on national and international teams.
