Doug Smith boast one of the finest competitive records of any track product in Kern County. As a sprinter at Taft High, he established himself as a San Joaquin Valley champion and one of the state's finest. Then, accepting a scholarship at Occidental College, he extended his fame to national and world-class recognition in the 100 and 200-yard dashes. He defeated Ray Norton an a powerful field in 1960 at Fresno's West Coast Relays. His personal best times in the sprints were 9.3 and 20.3. Still active in track, as a Masters participant, he showed his speed in winning the World Games 100 in New Zealand.
