Bakersfield native, Eddie Heffernan, at age 18 was the staring triple left halfback for the St. Mary's Galloping Gaels, a national power at the time. He scored the first touchdown in St. Mary's 20-13 victory over Texas echo in the 1938 Cotton Bowl. In an era of limited passing, Heffernan established himself as one of the nation's best. St. Mary's coach, Eddie "Slip" Madigan, once compared Heffernan to George Gipp, with whom Madigan had played at Nortre Dame. Heffernan also played baseball and basketball in high school, and played one seas of minor league baseball.
