Joined Arvin High faculty when the school opened in 1949. Was the Bear’s athletic director from the school open until his retirement in 1980. He coached football, basketball and track at various times during his career in Arvin. The school’s football facility was renamed Barle Stadium after his retirement. He also coached and taught at East High, Porterville High and Porterville Junior College prior to Arvin. Born and raised in Minnesota, the son of an iron miner, he played basketball and football at the University of Minnesota and was on the 1936 national championship squad. He began coaching in Litchfield, Minn. In 1937 before coming to California to work in the Alameda shipyards after World War II started. Eventually entered the Navy as an Ensign and worked his way to Lieutenant Junior Grade. Is an extremely popular and highly respected Kern County resident who impacted the lives of many over the past 87 years.
