Harriet Sheldon

athlete

Inducted February 16, 1995

Championship-caliber golf, sportsmanship and a deep reverence for the game have marked the career of Harriet Sheldon, a long-time Bakersfield College coach. Her talent made her a dominant figure in women's tournaments here and a well0known contender in top amateur events throughout California. Sheldon competed in a variety of sports in high school here, at Bakersfield College, San Jose State and College (now University) of the Pacific. For five years, she was a catcher on a local championship Bakersfield Hardware softball team whose pitcher was Wilda Mae Tuner, the first female Hall of Fame recipient 20 years ago. But when Sheldon concentrated on golf, the results were brilliant: five Kern County Women's Championships, various course records around the state, played in the state amateur tournament, the Trans-Mississippi and qualified for one U.S. Women's National Amateur.
