A native of Minnesota, Loken came to Bakersfield College as a gymnastics coach in 1956. Late became head of the physical education department, then moved to athletic director, a post he held from 1968-83. Under Loken’s guidance, BC attained great success in most sports. He earned a reputation as someone who would support all sports and was highly respected statewide in community college circles. Helped organize the state’s athletic director’s association. Also won a bronze Star for his actions in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II.
