Jesse Bradford

A 1957 Shafter High graduate who was arguably the finest local athlete of his era. Born in Texas and came to Shafter in the sixth grade, Bradford set a national high school record in1957 in the 180 yard low hurdles, running 18.4 seconds. Because he hit a hurdle, that meet director thought that disqualified him from the record and never submitted it to any national body. Went on to Arizona State where he competed in track and football - he was running back fro the legendary coach Frank Kush. He returned to Bakersfield for a teaching job at South High, then moved to BC where he was an assistant track coach for 25 years and continues to teach history.
