A 1979 Bakersfield High graduate, Reyes had an outstanding wrestling career at BHS and Cal State Bakersfield. Reyes wrestled four years at CSUB, from 1980-84, compiling a 151-22-1 record. As a senior, he went 47-2 and was both the Div. I and Div. II national champion at 141 pounds. Reyes was also the Div. II national champion in 1983 and helped CSUB win three Div. II national team titles. As a senior at BHS, Reyes went 32-0 at 127 pounds and was the heavy favorite to win a state championship before suffering a season-ending knee injury in practice prior to the Valley meet. After retiring as a wrestler, Reyes went into coaching. He led Purdue to a 179-120-3 dual meet record from 1992-2007, coaching 16 All-Americans and four Big 10 champions. Reyes also coached on the national and international levels. He is now athletic director at Pike High School in Indianapolis. Reyes was a 2012 inductee into the California Wrestling Hall of Fame.
