Joe Gonzalez

Athlete

Inducted 2017

One of the greatest wrestlers in Cal State Bakersfield’s history, Gonzales went 98-1 in his two seasons with the Roadrunners, including 55-0 in the 1979-80 season when he won both the NCAA Division II and Division I titles at 118 pounds. The 55 wins and the 448 takedowns he had that year are the most in the single-season history of the NCAA. Gonzales went 48-1 at East Los Angeles College in 1978 to win the junior college state championship. He also spent a year at the University of Oklahoma. After finishing his collegiate career, Gonzales was the AAU National Champion in 1980 and 1981 and represented the United States in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics but injuries derailed his medal hopes. This is his fourth Hall of Fame. He was inducted into the California Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2001, the Montebello High School Hall of Fame in 2002 and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2015.
