Joe Hernandez
athleteInducted February 1979
Fash and shifty, Joe Hernandez early on picked up the very fitting nickname of “Jackrabbit” for his blazing speed on the gridiron. But his fleetness was only one of the factors which helped him build a brilliant career, starting out at Garces High. He set a national rushing record at New Mexico Military Institute, then was a standout wide receiver for one season at Bakersfield College. The next two years, Joe was a standout running back at Arizona U. He was a high draft pick of the Washington Redskins but spent almost all of a 10-year pro career in the Canadian League, where he twice was named all-pro as a defensive cornerback. He now makes his home in Tuscon, Arizona.
