Graduate of Taft High School in 1952 in upper half of his class scholastically. Participated in football, baseball and track. Undefeated in shot and discuss during junior and senior years. Won California high school shot put championship as a junior. Was nation’s first 60’ shot-putter as a senior in 1952. Set national record of 60’ 9 7/8”. Entered University of Southern California where he set a freshman discus record. Victim of Bright’s Disease in November, 1954, six months after placing third in NCAA discus and third National AAU discus. Curt Mecham Born in Bakersfield. Attended local schools. Standout athlete at original Kern Union High School (Bakersfield HS) where he earned four letters each in football and track. Attended Bakersfield Junior College, where played under Hall of Fame member Jack Frost. Great runnier, left-handed passer and left-footed kicker. Named outstanding player in Western Junior College Conference. Starred as halfback at University of Oregon where he was team captain. Led Pacific Coast in rushing average (8.9 per carry). Threw three touchdown passes in upset win over USC. Played one year pro football, then entered Seabees in World War II. Now farming in Kern County. Wife Barbara; daughters Jerrianne and Susan.
