Born in Bakersfield but grew up in Orange County and Oakland. Was a professional boxer form 1969-82, compiling a 63-13 record with six draws and 17 knockouts. Won his first 36 fights before facing Bob Foster for the light-heavyweight title, which Foster won on a fourth-round knockout. Had a 22-2 amateur record with two draws. Died at age 55 from pugilistic dementia, which also caused the death of older brother and heavyweight contender Jerry Quarry, a Bob Elias inductee in 2000.
