Rick Mears

Rick Mears in a couple of years vaulted form obscurity to international renown. From teenage motorcycle and dunebuggy racing he moved to Indianapolis car competition. After three seasons of Indy type racing, he posted five victories and won the Indy 500 in 1979 after capturing the pole; Rick was the first driver to qualify at over 200 mph. In his first Indy in 1979 he qualified in the front row, finished ninth, and was named CO-Rookie of the race. He drives for the Gould Racing Team, with Mario Andretti and Bobby Unser.
