Ruben Castillo took up boxing at the age of 9 in the Bakersfield Saints Boxing Club, igniting what became a 15-year professional career and acclaim as No.1 challenger in the featherweight and junior lightweight divisions. Castillo fought four world champions, with his best showing a disrupted, split-decision loss to the late, great Salvador Sanchez. His other title fights were against Alexis Arguello, Juan LaPorte, Julio Cesar Chavez. But Castillo did win the U.S. Boxing Association featherweight crown. Castillo, a familiar figure on cable television, served for the past six years as expert analyst, working with Chick Hearn on fights from the Los Angeles Forum.
