Tim Painton’s coaching career may not have began at Bakersfield College, but the four-decades roaming the dugout at Gerry Collis Field is where he truly made his mark.
Painton came to Bakersfield College and took over the baseball program in 1996 and spent 27 years as the head coach. During his tenure, the Renegades won an astonishing 640 games, made the CCCAA playoffs 13 times and won four conference titles.
Most importantly, during his time as the Renegades head coach, 244 players moved on to a four-year program with 39 former players drafted by Major League Baseball teams, including first-round draft picks in consecutive seasons with Colby Lewis being drafted by the Texas Rangers in 1999 and Phil Dumatrait being drafted 22nd overall by the Boston Red Sox out of BC in 2000.
Under his tenure, a total of six former Renegades made major league rosters after their time at BC.
The 2024 inductee into the California Community College Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame began his playing career at Fullerton College before transferring to Fresno State. After three years of minor league baseball in Giants and Angels organizations, Painton embarked on a 40-year coaching career.
From 1983-92, Painton was an assistant coach at Fresno State where the Bulldogs appeared in eight NCAA postseasons and two College World Series appearances.
Painton then became the head coach at Porterville College in 1993, leading the Pirates to a school-record 28 wins in 1994.
